Edwin's day out to Hinchinbrook

So.. At the last meeting of the year I may have made a little promise to Edwin, our youngest and one of our newest members. That promise was to take him out over the Christmas break, with only our fly rods.
I was excited, but nervous. It's always a bit nerve racking when you want to put someone relatively new to the sport on to fish. The day was a good one, and it started well, until I sucked up a bit of a sand bank in the Herbert (causing some overheating issues). But we fished anyway, and it was great to have a Plan B, that provided plenty of excitement.
It was early on in the piece that Ed got his first bit of encouragement, we saw a number of small to middling pikeys, and they followed his fly numerous times for no hook-up. An early bust off from a nice jack in shallow water also put paid to one of his little zonker flies....
Fishing was pretty tough, but we persisted. The young fella listened well, and cast his arm off. He soon started to see the fish in the snags, and was keen to get his fly in there with some nice loops. But unfortnately (or fortunately) it wasn't until we entered a section of creek I hadn't fished before that his first real good opportunity presented itself. A school of nice sized pikeys were mooching around together in a gap between two mangroves. Ed's cast was perfect, and he was soon posing for pics with his first saltwater capture, a very nice 27cm pikey, on a pink thing he tied himself.
Shortly after we spotted some good fish on a snag a little further upstream.... These fish were jacks, from about 35 to 45cm in length, and atleast half a dozen were visible to us... Ed got another good cast in, but despite the jacks having a good old swipe at his offering, his consolation prize was an archer fish that snapped up the missed offering!
I didn't go fishless, with one cast to three good sized pikeys resulting in a 37cm jack coming to hand. It was taken on my 2wt and 6lb tippet. Not on my top 5, I was only momentarily disappointed that I missed my first pikey on the new boat.
But the day was all about Ed. It was great to see him have success, and it really made my end of year break!
