The Roll Cast
Ward Nicholas
We roll cast for many reasons including, getting a fly back from a snag, casting when there is no back casting space, casting with a strong following wind, raising an intermediate or sinking line into a casting position. When roll casting when the application of power occurs is important but the placement of the “D” loop in the line is critical. This action is about setting up line beside or behind the caster so there is sufficient drag and therefore tension on the line. So in saying this, the caster will need to adjust this “D” position. If there is no casting room behind the caster the “D” loop maybe placed beside the caster. When there is room then the “D” would drift a little further behind. Sometimes if there is sufficient wind behind the caster and distance is not a concern the “D” loop can be placed in front of the caster.
There are many good publications, DVD’s and utube sites that can assist the caster but most times it is more important to go out and practice in different situations but as with all casting with a goal in mind.
