Exploring on the Springs 21 09 - A short outing with Richard Stanhope
I've been meaning to check out some new creeks this year when the tides are right. This weekend was one of those days, as for the first time in months the bigger tide was mid-morning, giving us a good chance to get out of the launch creek, fish the destination for a couple of hours and then safely navigate our way back to the ramp. So... for my first outing as club president I decided to take the treasurer along for a brief session.
We couldn't have chosen a better morning for it. With the good tide corresponding with a slight breeze we navigated our way out of the shallow channel, out the front for a quick scoot, and then straight up into the destination creek. The early signs were promising, with plenty of bait moving nervously and the odd bust up giving both Richard and I plenty of encouragement.
We worked our way up the creek in search of Jacks... By now I think you all know of my little obsession.... Some guys have permit, I have mangrove jack.
Anyway, I had an absolute shocker, mainly due to a reel becoming somehow out of shape. I still haven't sorted it, but atleast have sorted the tangle in both the line and backing (200 yards of which now lies at the Townsville tip). But the water was great and despite the creek being very shallow we managed to venture just about all the way up the tidal reaches, finding some very good structure and putting some good casts in close to same.
In contrast I would say that Richard had a pretty good morning, fishing mostly with chartreuse or yellow clousers he lay some precision casts down, and was rewarded with a number of strikes, one of which resulting in a nice 37cm jack, and a new personal best I reckon. Not long after he found another smaller, but no less pretty, jack that also came to hand.
The trick of the day was precision casting and line management. We needed to get our flies right in close in order to tempt the strike, and good line management was important so as not to end up in tangles.
Thanks for the company Richard, despite the challenges I faced the company and your fish made it a pretty darned good day out!
