The Dissolving Gurgle Prop - or why not to use biodegradable foam
Pics by C Finucane
Inspired after reading Peter Morse's latest book, and an urge to catch whiting on fly, Chris set out to tie a couple of Morsie's Gurgle Pops on the Vice he got for christmas.
It looked good until the swim test,
when within seconds of hitting the water, the fly dissolved back to the bare hook!
The quote from Chris:
My wife bought me a fly vice for Christmas and I recently bought Peter Morse's book on fly tying. I am keen to have a crack at catching whiting on poppers, so I decided I would tie the "Gurgle Pop" as described in his book. Not much is needed just a long shank hook, some polar fibre, and some 8mm packing rod (available from any big hardware store). Bunnings will have the packing rod for sure I reckoned and without much of a search I found a bag of rod about 8-10mm already cut for the princely some of $7.00. Tying the fly was a breeze so I knocked up a half a dozen,I rigged one on the rod to give it a try in the pool and it worked a treat except when I pulled it out of the water it dissolved before my eyes. I had bought packing foam that dissolves in water.
Great Stuff Chris, Thanks for sharing!
