Wounded Warriors 2013
North Queensland Fly Fishers – Support Soldiers
North Queensland FlyFishers Inc. is an organisation created for those passionate about all things Flyfishing. Whilst normally operating as leisure group, in 2012 the club members collectively made the decision to make a contribution to the community.
The Wounded Warriors is an organisation based in America created to assist the rehabilitation and lives of wounded service members. Seeing this as an excellent opportunity the NQ Flyfishers jumped on board and began a program in Townsville. After the success of the program in 2012 the decision was made to continue the program in 2013.
In October, the NQ Flyfishers coordinated a day that included learning to cast, learning to build a fly and of course catching a barramundi on their fly. Many wounded soldiers spend the majority of their time undertaking some form of rehabilitation. The purpose of the exercise was not only to improve participation rate in the outside community for these men and women but also to assist in taking their mind off their rehabilitation by giving them a challenge. The program also allows these soldiers to engage with other folk from the different base rehab centres. The program also brought North Queensland’s wounded soldiers together to create a relaxed and fun environment.
Sadly the program only saw three participants this year, however it was still considered a success. All participants produced a fly, learnt to cast and caught multiple fish. Those that attended had a fantastic day and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.
The NQ Flyfishers Inc. would like to thank all it members for their assistance and hard work leading up to and on the day. Another thank you to the Townsville RSL for their kind donation, without which the day would not have happened. Finally a big thank you to all the men and women that attended.
